Metadata is additional information that describes content so that it can be indexed and retrieved using a variety of classifications.

The Dublin Core Metadata initiative began in 1995 to develop conventions for resource discovery on the World Wide Web.  Dublin Core Metadata is specifically intended to support resource discovery.
